Arnold Arre’s new graphic novel: Martial Law Babies (teaser poster)

Check out the 1st teaser poster of MARTIAL LAW BABIES. A new graphic novel of Arnold Arre.I’m really honored for posting this and being the 1st to share to everyone the teaser poster of MARTIAL LAW BABIES.

And look out the photo elements in the teaser poster, aren’t that very nostalgic? ehhehe

There’s a card of Go ranger (Star Ranger), Voltes V Godaiking box, Chewbacca action figure, Indian plastic toy ( tawag ko dyan tau tauhan), the logo of the ‘Lipunan‘ something and if you were born in the 70’s and being a kid during the 80’s… I know you are one of those kids who watches “Uncle Bob Lucky Seven Club” on TV and fantasizes to take home all those cool toys showing on TV. Its fun to remember those years. My classmates in UST elementary school was there singing, and some of them were greeted during their birthdays, while me at home staring on TV, waiting for the latest toys to be shown and featured. I got crazy everytime they show the Dinobots of Transformers toys.. ahhh memories..

And to know something about Martial Babies, check out my previous blog post at Komiks News Now, were Luis Katigbak got an interview with Arnold Arre, and me got a glimpse of the comic pages from a far during the Neil Gaiman event ahaha.

another great Filipino graphic novel to look out for…

just watch this blog for more updates!!

thanks to Arnold and Cynthia Arre for the head ups!!

So guys… Where were you when Uncle Bob formed a club ?

Christian Voltar Alcala meets Stan Lee

Written by azrael on 3:05 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Christian Voltar Alcala, son of the late Filipino master comics illustrator Alfredo Alcala, is here having a big meeting with the legendary Stan Lee, co-creator and writer of famous comic books such as Captain America, Spider-Man Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and the X-Men.

By: Christian Voltar Alcala

Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA

On May 4, 2008, my mom along with my wife and I drove from Vallejo to Los Angeles to attend a comic book convention where Stan Lee is a special guest.

It was a great experience meeting the legendary Stan Lee and my heart leaped with gladness upon having the honor of meeting this great man with such splendor and strength.

Here is Stan Lee’s reminiscence on my dad’s artworks, as I carry on the torch of my father’s legacy:

“Dear Christian,

I am highly honored that you would want me to write a few words about your father’s wonderful artwork– and about yours.

Rarely does a son manage to carry on a glorious tradition as splendidly as you have carried on your father’s.

I remember Alfredo’s illustrations well. They were almost poetic in their beauty. He was indeed a master illustrator who put so much of himself and his imagination in every drawing. We at Marvel are proud to have worked with such a gifted artist and such a true gentleman.

I wish you every success as you so capably follow in his fabled footsteps.

Stan Lee

”I respect this noble and righteous man for his achievements, as much as I love and respected my father. He is true to his word, the qualities of a great knight in shining armor which shines with honor throughout the entire Kingdom of Camelot.

In 2006, Roy Thomas and Stan Lee had a project on Marvel and it was an honor when Roy and Stan acknowledged me their book-“Stan Lee’s Amazing Marvel Universe”.

I shall always treasure this book as I have treasured my father’s legacy.

Enchanted Kingdom to Hold OtakonEK 2008

OtakonEK 2008

Riding on this popularity, the country’s first and only world-class theme park is giving a new twist to the popular anime convention by holding it this time at Enchanted Kingdom. “OtakonEK 2008” promises a colorful pop festival of anime, toys, manga, movies, video games, and music amid the park’s exciting and spectacular rides and attractions.

Guaranteed to give spice to any anime convention are the cosplayers or costume players. Cosplaying originated in Japan in 1978 and is rapidly gaining popularity in the country. Aside from anime themes, fantasy and science-fiction movies have also become part of cosplaying, owing to the international success of films such as “The Matrix”, “Star Wars”, “Harry Potter” and “The Lord of the Rings”.

Many otakus like to dress up in their favorite characters and even act the part! They prefer to do their own costumes although here in the Philippines, some are commissioned. Costume competitions are regularly held during these conventions.

“OtakonEK 2008” provides a perfect venue for cosplayers as they can come to the park for FREE this September 28, 2008 provided they come in their full costume. Characters from an animation, comics, toys, gaming, TV or movies are accepted.

A cosplayer may pre-register at http://www.enchantedkingdom.com.ph/otakonek before September 28, 2008 or register at the park gate near the Group Sales Office on the event day itself from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. EK reserves the right to refuse free entrance to those who do not meet the criteria and to those who do not meet the park’s standards for wholesome and safe entertainment.

Pedriña and his Kapampangan Comic Book Superheroes

great to see Ner Pedrina being featured

you can read more about the comic artist and his works here in The Prodigal Kamaru at http://kamaru.blogspot.com/2008/09/pedria-and-his-kapampangan-comic-book.html

Kabalen Superheroes in Pinoy Comics

Although now based in Manila and working for Tagalog/English comics, Kapampangan elements have not failed to disappear from Pedriña’s consciousness, as in his collection of original Pinoy superheroes titled Sanduguan (blood compact), most of the lead protagonists are Kapampangan.
“Most of what we have [in comics] are Tagalogs and Americans,” Pedriña explains. “I want diversity so I make characters from Mindanao, Kalinga, Bohol, Ilocos, Laguna, etc. but a lot of my characters are Kapampangan.”
